about

Galaxy may be one of the most influential homegrown bands from San Francisco, CA that you've never heard of. Between 1980 and 1984 the Galaxy Band represented as remnants of the former Haight- Ashbury Hippie culture. Sticking to the script of the Hippie ideology Galaxy was anti corporate control or big business band. The band recorded 2 independent studio albums as well performed extensively around the Bay Area but the Haight Ashbury area of San Francisco was their stomping ground. Money was not their motivation for performing or playing music at all.

Galaxy donated performances regularly to the Gumption Soup Kitchen for their patrons. The band played numerous benefit shows for the Gumption as well as for other community causes in the Haight-Ashbury. Each year during their reign Galaxy also held a free Thanksgiving Day dinner and performance which also featured other bands at the On Broadway Theater in San Francisco.

Dave Galaxy was the founder and leader of the band. He was also an artisan and jewelry maker as well. Dave was an army veteran and served in Vietnam. The Galaxy Band Family was bigger than music. The Family consisted of Marlon the Magician, Waterfall, Big Sonny, Tom , Roya the Artist and Mary Ellen the dancer along with a host of other remnants from Haight -Ashbury's golden years. The band house house and rehearsal studio was in a 3 story store front located in the San Francisco's Mission District. The store front was the residence for many of the artists and artisans in the entourage. In 1982 Galaxy acquired the old Hamm's Beer Brewery on 17th and Harrison St in the Mission district. It was renamed The Vat's. The 1st and 2nd floors of the building were converted into rehearsal studios for bands. The Vat's was a haven for the San Francisco Punk Rock scene. DRI (Dirty Rotten Imbibes) and Verbal Abuse were among some of the bands that hung in the Galaxy circle.

Also in 1982 The Galaxy Band opened up Galactic Promotions which was a Band CO-OP center. Bands could join the CO-OP for about $10.00 per month. The services offered where 1) Use of copy machine to reproduce band flyers. 2) Use of Art Room to create their fliers 3) Use of Microfiche machine to book gigs though the USA. 4) Use of video room for video training and instruction on various musical instruments. Galactic Promotions was the brain child of Dan Kennan. Dan was the drummer for Galaxy. Dave Galaxy played lead guitar and also sang lead vocals: Ebony Robinson- lead female vocalist, Otay Nutumbe -Bass and vocals, Ron Hardy aka Tarumbae - -congas, kalimba, percussion and timbales, Omar - congas. There were a host of other musicians that graced the stage when Galaxy fired up including Rick (The Kick aka Motown) Robinson, Ed ( Spoon) Mitchell and Greg Wallace. Galaxy was a family bonded together by the will to create music , art, magic and anything else one could imagine.

Galaxy would also produced their own shows at out door venues such as the Band Shell in Golden Gate Park and Union Square as well as performed at San Francisco's Juneteenth Festival in 1983.
